John S. Maxwell, 84, of West Branch, formerly of Muscatine, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at his home in West Branch. John Stewart Maxwell was born on July 12, 1941, in Muscatine, Iowa the son of John Louis and Helen Margaret (Stewart) Maxwell. He graduate from Muscatine High School in 1959 and then attended one year at Davenport Community College for Truck Driving School. On August 24, 1963, John was united in marriage to Sandra Birkhofer in Muscatine and later divorced.. John proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1966 – 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Long Binh Army Base during the Tet Offensive as a combat engineer. John and Sandra had two children, Jennifer and Julia. John worked at Bandag prior to moving to International Falls, owning and operating the Gateway Trading Post from 1978 – 1985 and then moved back to Muscatine. He worked for Proctor and Gamble starting in 1998 and retired in 2011. On June 5, 1999, John married Lillian “Jean” McDaniel in Wilton. John enjoyed fishing, camping, cars, motorcycles and going to the casino.
John will be deeply missed by his children, Jennifer (Mike) Thomas of West Branch and Julia Edwards of West Branch; step-children, Joe, Telitha, Tina, Vicki and Jamie; grandchildren, Emmersen Thomas, Teague Thomas, Jacob Edwards and Jenna Edwards; sister, Bonnie Varney of Waterloo and brother, Mike (Chris) Maxwell of Muscatine.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Quinton Maxwell.
